Contract Extension
Vaiuta Latu, a 20-year-old backrow player, has extended his contract with the Queensland Rugby Union (QRU) until the end of 2027. The agreement secures his position with the Queensland Reds for the next two seasons.
Player Performance and Role
Latu made his Queensland Reds debut last year in Super Rugby AUS and against Japan's Saitama Panasonic Wild Knights. His performance, characterized by ball-carries and physical presence, earned him a spot in the 2026 Reds squad. The extension highlights his value as an No.8 option, particularly as Wallabies captain Harry Wilson is currently sidelined for approximately six weeks due to knee surgery.
Latu, known as "Vice," expressed satisfaction with the contract extension. He stated that joining the Reds for Super Rugby AUS in September was a significant experience, allowing him to connect with senior players and learn from them. He also noted that his involvement in the Reds Academy previously involved playing defense against the main squad, and it was beneficial to transition to carrying the ball within the team.
He played as the starting No.8 in the Reds' opening Super Rugby AUS game in September, where he contributed to the team's offense. Latu mentioned that the games and training towards the end of 2025 sharpened his ambitions for the 2026 season. He also indicated that missing out on Australia Under-20s selection last year motivated him to improve core skills like cleanouts.
Coach's Statement
Reds Head Coach Les Kiss commented on Latu's progression, stating that he "stepped up in the first game he played for us as a late replacement." Kiss added that Latu has been impressive in subsequent games and training, and the contract extension is a "worthy reward."
