Florida Panhandle Reports Rare Snowfall, Freezing Temperatures Persist Statewide

View source

A rare snowfall event occurred in parts of the Florida Panhandle on Sunday.

A storm system delivered up to 2 inches of snow to southern portions of Alabama and the Florida Panhandle, including Pensacola. This snowfall follows a record event in mid-January, almost one year prior, when Pensacola received between 6 to 8 inches of snow.

Freezing temperatures continued across parts of Florida into the beginning of the week. Orlando and other areas faced a freeze warning from Sunday night into Monday morning, with temperatures projected to fall to at least 25 degrees Fahrenheit and wind chills in the low 20s. Further south, Naples and surrounding areas were under a cold weather advisory for the same period, with anticipated 29-degree wind chills.

National Weather Service (NWS) meteorologist Joe Wegman stated that while cold temperatures and snow are atypical for Florida, the current cold weather was expected to be "short-lived." Temperatures were projected to rise to the upper 30s by Monday night and into the upper 40s by Tuesday night.
