Former Green Bay Packers and Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy is a candidate for the Pittsburgh Steelers' head coach position.
Candidate Consideration
ESPN's Adam Schefter reported that the Steelers are expected to speak with McCarthy regarding the vacancy. McCarthy's name had also been mentioned in connection with head coach searches for the New York Giants and Tennessee Titans. The Giants' position has since been filled by John Harbaugh.
Connection to Aaron Rodgers
Steelers owner Art Rooney II addressed quarterback Aaron Rodgers' future in Pittsburgh, noting that Rodgers joined the team to play for former coach Mike Tomlin. Rooney stated that Tomlin’s departure would "most likely affect his decision" regarding his future with the team.
McCarthy and Rodgers have a shared history, with Rodgers serving as the Packers' starting quarterback from 2008 until McCarthy's dismissal during the 2018 season. The two won Super Bowl XLV together. McCarthy's potential hiring by the Steelers could lead to speculation about the possibility of Rodgers also joining the team.
