NBL Next Stars Program Welcomes Youngest Recruit

Luke Paul, a 6’6” point guard from Perth, has signed with the NBL Next Stars program, becoming its youngest player in history at 16 years, 10 months, and 29 days old. This surpasses the previous record set by Dash Daniels of Melbourne United.

Player Profile and Achievements

Paul has experience playing with the Willetton Tigers in NBL1 West and the Perth Wildcats Academy. His junior career includes representing Australia at youth level, where he has earned several accolades:

  • MVP and All-Star Five honors at the 2025 FIBA U16 Asia Cup, leading Australia to a gold medal.
  • Named to the All-Star Five at the 2025 FIBA U17 Oceania Championships.

He is anticipated to participate in Western Australia Metro's team at Basketball Australia’s Under-18 National Championships in April and is expected to be a key member of the Australian team at this year’s FIBA U17 World Cup in Turkey.

Statements on Signing

Paul stated, “It’s a dream come true… to sign a contract at 16 is pretty cool. I’m very excited and can’t wait to get started.” He added that the NBL Next Stars program is a proven pathway to the NBA and that competing against professional players will benefit his development.

Liam Santamaria, General Manager of the NBL Next Stars program, commented on Paul's potential, noting his positional size, skill, and playing style, which he believes will translate to the professional level. Santamaria also expressed enthusiasm for supporting Paul’s development.

Future Development Plan

Paul and his representatives will collaborate with the NBL to determine his NBL club placement for the upcoming seasons. He will be eligible for the NBA Draft in 2028. Before joining professional ranks as a Next Star in the 2026–27 NBL season, Paul will continue his development under the guidance of Centre of Excellence head coach Robbie McKinlay and assistant coach Braden Cotter at the Australian Institute of Sport for the next six months.
