David Byrne's Brisbane Concert Features Unique Staging and Classic Songs

View source

David Byrne performed with a 12-piece backing band at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre. Byrne and his band wore iridescent orange costumes, performing on a stage free of traditional equipment.

The performance structure mirrored the "Stop Making Sense" tour. It commenced with "Heaven" from Talking Heads' 1979 album "Fear of Music." A visual backdrop featuring the Earth was displayed.

The initial lineup included Ray Suen on violin, Kely Pinheiro on cello, and Daniel Mintseris on synthesizer. Additional musicians joined progressively, contributing to the ensemble. The band's mobile setup allowed all members to be in perpetual motion, performing like a marching band. Video screens projected different backdrops, such as an empty department store and a cornfield for "(Nothing But) Flowers," and an ocean scene for "Slippery People."

Byrne discussed themes related to appearance and perception during the show. Solo songs, including "My Apartment Is My Friend" and "T-shirt," were part of the setlist. Slogans like "Make America Gay Again" and "Everyone Watches Women’s Sports" were displayed during "T-shirt."

The concert featured several Talking Heads classics, with "This Must Be the Place (Naive Melody)" being one of the songs that prompted audience engagement. Kely Pinheiro's cello performance was highlighted, particularly her contributions to "Houses in Motion" and her lead cello role in "Psycho Killer."

During "Life During Wartime," footage showing ICE squads and New York City police with protesters was projected. The concert concluded with the song "Burning Down the House."
