Jim Morrison Completes Historic Ski Descent of Mount Everest's North Face

Mountaineer Jim Morrison completed a significant ascent and ski descent of Mount Everest's North Face in October. This achievement followed his dream of summitting the peak.

Morrison reached the summit with filmmaker Jimmy Chin and a group of 12 others. Everest's North Face, at 29,000 feet, is recognized as a highly challenging and exposed route. Chin described it as the "holy grail of mountaineering."

Following the summit, Morrison began a four-hour ski descent covering 9,000 feet. Chin explained that this section is a "no fall zone," indicating that errors could have severe consequences. Morrison described moments during the descent when he considered stopping but continued.

This endeavor was a shared aspiration with his late partner, Hilaree Nelson, who died in 2022 during a skiing incident in Nepal. Morrison also experienced a personal loss in 2011 when his wife and two children died in a plane crash. He expressed a desire for his legacy to be about moving forward and inspiring others to pursue their dreams.

Chin, an Academy Award-winning filmmaker, is expected to release a film about Morrison's journey later this year. Chin characterized Morrison's ski descent as the "most significant ski descent that you can do on planet earth."
