Patriots Offense vs. Texans Defense
An AFC Pro Personnel director noted the impressive talent of the Texans' defense. The director questioned the ability of Patriots Offensive Coordinator Josh McDaniels to provide effective solutions for quarterback Drake Maye against a Texans defense that relies on strong individual play rather than complex schemes, often generating pressure with a four-man rush. The director suggested the Texans would not alter their defensive approach until the Patriots demonstrate a clear counter.
An AFC defensive back coach, whose team previously played the Patriots, indicated that the Texans are expected to focus on containing Drake Maye, aiming to prevent him from making plays with his legs. Texans linebackers, in particular, are anticipated to discourage Maye's rushing attempts and seek to make him accountable when he does run.
The coach also predicted a significant game for wide receiver Stefon Diggs, especially on early downs against the Texans' preferred zone coverage. However, it was highlighted that Patriots receivers must win individual matchups on third downs, when the Texans are expected to play more man coverage. Maye's ball placement is considered vital, but receivers will also need to make plays on contested catches.
