Event Structure and Broadcast Details
The Pro Tour spanned three intensive days. On Friday and Saturday, players engaged in morning sessions of Lorwyn Eclipsed Booster Draft before transitioning to five rounds of Standard Constructed play each afternoon. The top eight players from the field then advanced to a single-elimination Standard showdown on Sunday to crown the champion.
Live coverage of the event was broadcast on the Magic Twitch channel and the Play MTG YouTube channel, commencing at 11 a.m. ET on Friday and Saturday, and 10 a.m. ET on Sunday.
Standard Metagame Overview
The Standard format for Pro Tour Lorwyn Eclipsed incorporated expansion sets from Wilds of Eldraine onward, including the newly released Lorwyn Eclipsed set. Analysis of the 306 submitted Standard decklists revealed a significant trend:
106 competitors (34.6% of the field) utilized decks built around mana acceleration and "Nature's Rhythm" strategies. These decks commonly featured creatures such as Llanowar Elves, Gene Pollinator, Badgermole Cub, Spider Manifestation, and Quantum Riddler.
Badgermole Cub and Llanowar Elves emerged as the most-played nonland main deck cards, each appearing in 548 copies across 137 players' lists (44.8% of the field).
The metagame at the Pro Tour was dominated by several key archetypes:
- Simic Rhythm: 48 players (15.7%)
- Bant Rhythm: 46 players (15.0%)
- Sultai Reanimator: 31 players (10.1%)
- Bant Airbending: 20 players (6.5%)
- Izzet Spellementals: 15 players (4.9%)
- Izzet Lessons: 13 players (4.2%)
- Dimir Midrange: 11 players (3.6%)
- Five-Color Rhythm: 9 players (2.9%)
The remainder of the metagame displayed a diverse array of strategies. Prior to the Pro Tour, at Magic Spotlight: The Avatar events, Simic Ouroboroid achieved a breakthrough. Badgermole Cub decks collectively showed an improved win rate of 56% against non-Cub opponents, a notable increase from 39% at Magic World Championship 31. Conversely, Dimir Midrange and Sultai Reanimator experienced a decline, with the latter particularly affected by increased graveyard hate.
Prominent Archetypes and Lorwyn Eclipsed Additions
New cards from Lorwyn Eclipsed significantly influenced both established and emerging archetypes.
Simic Rhythm (48 players)
This deck leverages mana acceleration to deploy powerful creatures and facilitate strong late-game outcomes, often culminating in cards like Craterhoof Behemoth.
Bant Rhythm (46 players)
A variant of Simic Rhythm, this archetype incorporates white for cards like Brightglass Gearhulk. This allows the deck to fetch one-mana interactive tools such as Meltstrider's Resolve, Seam Rip, and Soul-Guide Lantern, or retrieve Mockingbird for recursive plays.
Sultai Reanimator (31 players)
This graveyard-focused combo deck aims to fill its graveyard rapidly to enable Superior Spider-Man, which can enter as a copy of Bringer of the Last Gift. Lorwyn Eclipsed additions such as Formidable Speaker, Deceit, and Wistfulness enhanced its strategy and resilience. A four-color variant, registered by Markus Valori and Roope Metsä, added red for Ill-Timed Explosion as a discard outlet, alongside Ashling, Rekindled for acceleration and additional discarding options.
Bant Airbending (20 players)
This combo deck utilizes its namesake mechanic to manage permanents or reset its own creatures for value. Key components include Doc Aurlock, Grizzled Genius, Appa, Steadfast Guardian, and Aang, Swift Savior, which can generate infinite Ally tokens. The card Interdimensional Web Watch contributed to the deck's ability to recover and locate crucial pieces.
Izzet Spellementals (15 players)
This archetype focuses on casting cheap instants and sorceries to fuel creatures like Eddymurk Crab and Hearth Elemental. These creatures, in turn, reduce the cost of Sunderflock for powerful board-sweeping effects.
Izzet Lessons (13 players)
Revolving around Lesson cards, many of which serve as removal, this deck uses Gran-Gran to facilitate spell interactions with Accumulated Wisdom and Combustion Technique. Artist's Talent and Monument to Endurance provide ongoing value. Some versions omitted Stormchaser's Talent and trimmed Boomerang Basics to include more interaction like main-deck Spell Pierce, achieving a higher win rate (56.1%) compared to stock lists (51.8%). Lorwyn Eclipsed additions included Steam Vents for mana base upgrades and Spell Snare for countermagic.
Dimir Midrange (11 players)
This deck employs a suite of removal, discard, and countermagic to control opponents, while applying pressure with evasive creatures and generating card advantage from Enduring Curiosity and Kaito, Bane of Nightmares. Lorwyn Eclipsed additions included Faerie synergies with Flitterwing Nuisance, Bitterbloom Bearer, and Glen Elendra Guardian, as well as Requiting Hex for removal. A Dimir Excruciator deck, registered by Javier Dominguez and teammates, focused on milling the opponent with Doomsday Excruciator via Restless Reef, utilizing Superior Spider-Man to copy Excruciator and Deceit for consistency.
Selesnya Landfall
Yuta Yokokawa registered a Selesnya Landfall deck that uses Escape Tunnel and Fabled Passage to trigger cards like Mightform Harmonizer, Icetill Explorer, and Sazh's Chocobo. Sapling Nursery was included for longer games. The deck notably featured four main deck copies of Doorkeeper Thrull, which prevents creatures and artifacts from triggering their "enters the battlefield" abilities. Lorwyn Eclipsed additions for Selesnya Landfall included Temple Garden and Sapling Nursery.
Jeskai Control
This archetype utilizes a blend of countermagic, removal, and card-draw, featuring cards like Day of Judgment for board wipes and Ultima. Lorwyn Eclipsed additions included Hallowed Fountain, Steam Vents, Sear, and Spell Snare. Nick Talbot's Jeskai Elementals deck used Ashling, Rekindled for mana and incorporated Beza, the Bounding Spring.
Golgari Gravefall
Matthew Dewitte registered a Golgari combo deck centered on a loop involving Beifong's Bounty Hunters, a sacrifice outlet (Umbral Collar Zealot), and a creature that returns when a land enters (Bloodghast), enabling infinite surveil triggers.
Abzan Roots
Cheng Han Lin's graveyard-based combo deck featured Insidious Roots, which creates and grows Plant tokens when a creature card leaves the graveyard. Emptiness and Dawnhand Dissident from Lorwyn Eclipsed served as new enablers.
Temur Harmonizer
Team Sanctum of All presented a combo deck utilizing Mightform Harmonizer, combining it with Fabled Passage and Full Bore for an explosive attack.
Rakdos Monument
Benton Madsen and Adria Martin registered Rakdos decks based on discard effects and Monument to Endurance with Moonshadow, which grows when permanent cards are put into the graveyard.
Impact of Lorwyn Eclipsed Cards
The Lorwyn Eclipsed set introduced several impactful cards that significantly influenced the Standard metagame:
- Formidable Speaker: This was the most-played new addition, appearing in 419 copies across 146 players (47.7% of the field). It provided utility for combo consistency, graveyard setup, and card conversion.
- Wistfulness (341 copies) and Deceit (260 copies): These evoke Elementals were prominent in Elemental-focused decks and Sultai Reanimator. Wistfulness also saw play in sideboards for artifact/enchantment removal, while Deceit enabled new control and combo decks, particularly with Superior Spider-Man.
- Sunderflock (143 copies): Included by 41 players (13.4%), this 5/5 flier provided board-resetting effects at potentially low mana costs in Elemental decks.
- Shock Lands: New dual lands such as Temple Garden, Steam Vents, and Hallowed Fountain significantly improved the mana bases of numerous multicolor decks.
- Interactive Spells: Requiting Hex, Spell Snare, and Sear were introduced as new answers to various threats and creatures.
- Oko, Lorwyn Liege: Emerged as a notable sideboard option.
- Shimmerwilds Growth: Enabled Formidable Speaker to function as a ramp effect.
Additionally, Lorwyn Eclipsed was noted for introducing sufficient depth for new typal (tribal) decks, including Selesnya Kithkin, Golgari Elves, Azorius Merfolk, Izzet Elementals, and Rakdos Goblins.
