The world's 10 wealthiest individuals experienced a nearly fivefold increase in their combined net worth since 2016, rising from $559 billion at the end of 2015 to $2.6 trillion currently. Elon Musk, now the world's richest person, accounts for $682 billion of this total.
Changes in the Wealth Landscape
The list of the top 10 richest people in 2015 included Bill Gates, Amancio Ortega, Warren Buffett, Jeff Bezos, Carlos Slim, Charles Koch, David Koch, Mark Zuckerberg, Larry Page, and Larry Ellison. Most of these individuals remain in the top 25 today, with the exception of the late David Koch, whose widow and family now hold the 22nd position.
Elon Musk's entry is the most significant change, as the Tesla and SpaceX CEO now leads the list. Other current top billionaires include Larry Page and Sergey Brin (Alphabet co-founders), Jeff Bezos (Amazon), Larry Ellison (Oracle), Mark Zuckerberg (Meta), Bernard Arnault (LVMH), Steve Ballmer (former Microsoft CEO), Jensen Huang (Nvidia), and Warren Buffett.
Noteworthy Shifts in Rankings
Several individuals have seen their rankings decline despite their net worth increasing due to faster growth in tech fortunes. Amancio Ortega, founder of Inditex, dropped from second to 15th place, and telecoms mogul Carlos Slim fell from fifth to 16th. Charles Koch also moved from sixth to 24th.
Bill Gates and Warren Buffett have fallen in the rankings largely due to substantial charitable donations. Gates, who was the wealthiest a decade ago, is now 17th after donating over $60 billion to the Gates Foundation. Buffett has also given away over half of his Berkshire Hathaway stock.
Scale of Wealth Growth
The most prominent difference is the sheer scale of individual fortunes. In 2015, the top 10 net worths ranged from approximately $40 billion to $84 billion. Currently, these figures range from $148 billion to $682 billion, indicating that the world's wealthiest individual today is eight times richer on paper than the richest person a decade ago.
Musk's immense wealth growth is attributed to his significant stakes in highly valued companies such as Tesla, whose shares have surged approximately 27-fold, as well as SpaceX and xAI, which have seen their private valuations rise to $800 billion and $230 billion, respectively.
