View source

Philadelphia Eagles Head Coach Nick Sirianni and General Manager Howie Roseman held a post-mortem press conference to address the 2023 season and future plans.

Coaching Staff and Offensive Approach

Sirianni explained that changes were implemented during the season regarding play-calling, with his increased involvement. He stated that all decisions were made in what he believed to be the best interest of the team, despite not achieving their goals. Regarding the future offensive coordinator, Sirianni stated that decisions on collaborative approaches or coordinator autonomy are premature. He affirmed his role as head coach, providing oversight and expertise across all aspects of the team, emphasizing that his actions are for the team's benefit.

Roseman addressed the potential for future offensive coordinators to depart for head coaching opportunities, noting it as a positive reflection of the Eagles' success. He stated that the team prioritizes winning immediately and accepts the ramifications of losing successful personnel.

On the topic of a new offensive coordinator bringing their own staff, Sirianni indicated that this decision would depend on the selected candidate. The current focus is on identifying and interviewing the best possible candidates for the role.

Sirianni also commented on Kevin Patullo's future, suggesting that Patullo would have other opportunities, and the team would support what is best for him and his family.

Player Performance and Roster

When asked about Jalen Hurts' role in the offense's regression, Sirianni stated that all coaches and players, including himself and Hurts, contributed to the offense's performance. He reiterated his confidence in Hurts as a quarterback capable of winning games.

Roseman echoed the sentiment of a disappointing season and the need for collective self-reflection. He highlighted Hurts' past successes and contributions as a starting quarterback for the organization.

Regarding the possibility of trading A.J. Brown, Roseman stated that great players are difficult to find in the NFL and identified Brown as one such player who loves football.

Roseman declined to comment on Lane Johnson's future, stating that player conversations are private. He praised Johnson as a Hall of Fame-level player who continues to perform at an elite level.

Sirianni outlined the process for hiring a new offensive coordinator, indicating that he would consult various resources, including Roseman, Chairman Jeffrey Lurie, and key players like Jalen Hurts, Saquon Barkley, A.J. Brown, and Lane Johnson. Ultimately, the head coach is responsible for making the final decision.

Offseason Strategy and Resources

Roseman discussed the natural evolution of a team's roster and salary structure. He explained that successful drafting of young players, particularly on defense in recent years, necessitates financial adjustments. He emphasized the importance of retaining core, homegrown players while continuing to draft high-level talent to fill roles, acknowledging that sacrifices in player retention are sometimes necessary.
