The United Kingdom is deploying military personnel and equipment to Belgium to enhance its defenses after a series of drone incursions into Belgian airspace. These incidents are suspected by some officials to be linked to Russia.

Sir Richard Knighton, the head of the UK military, confirmed that his Belgian counterpart requested assistance earlier this week. UK equipment and personnel are currently being deployed to Belgium.

Belgium's main airport, Zaventem, experienced a temporary closure on Thursday night due to nearby drone sightings. Drones were also reported in other locations, including a military base. Approximately 3,000 Brussels Airlines passengers were affected by the disruption, leading to flight cancellations and diversions.
Suspected Origin and Official Statements
Sir Richard Knighton stated that the source of the drones is not yet definitively known, but he considered Russian involvement to be "plausible." German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius and Belgian security services have expressed suspicion towards Russia. However, Belgian Defence Minister Theo Francken previously acknowledged a lack of conclusive evidence to support this claim. Francken noted that what was initially perceived as an isolated issue affecting military bases has evolved into a broader threat impacting civilian infrastructure across multiple European nations.
Broader Geopolitical Context
Sir Richard Knighton identified Russia as the "most pressing threat" to Europe, referencing the conflict in Ukraine and instances of alleged sabotage and killings on UK soil. He emphasized the necessity for nations to strengthen their defenses against "hybrid warfare."
International Cooperation
The decision for the UK to aid Belgium was made in consultation with Defence Secretary John Healey and in coordination with NATO allies. Germany also confirmed its intent to provide anti-drone support to Belgium following a request from Brussels.
