Apple Rolls Out iOS 26.3, Details Emerge for iOS 26.4

Apple has officially released iOS 26.3, marking the third major update to its operating system and bringing new features alongside preparations for future enhancements. Simultaneously, insights into the upcoming iOS 26.4 update have been revealed through its ongoing beta testing, outlining new functionalities and an anticipated public release in late March. These developments follow previous releases, including iOS 26.2 and a subsequent bug fix update.

iOS 26.3 Update Details

iOS 26.3 was released in late January, aligning with Apple's typical schedule for x.3 updates, often appearing approximately one week after Martin Luther King Jr. Day. This update is notably considered the final release before a significant enhancement to Siri.

Key features introduced in iOS 26.3 include:

  • Wallpaper Changes: The Weather section has been distinctly separated from Astronomy within the iPhone's wallpaper screen, with new Weather options now available in the gallery.
  • Android Transfer Option: A new setting, developed through a collaboration between Apple and Google, now simplifies content transfer from an iPhone to an Android device. Google is also launching a similar feature for Android users switching to iPhone.
  • Notification Forwarding (EU Users): Users in the European Union can now configure notification forwarding from their iPhone to non-Apple Watch wearables.
  • EU Compliance-Related Changes: Additional modifications related to European Union regulations are anticipated.
  • Location Privacy: For iPhones and iPads equipped with Apple C1 and C1X modems, a new feature enables limiting precise location when utilizing cellular services with specific providers.

iOS 26.3 brings a range of enhancements, from expanded wallpaper choices to crucial EU compliance features and an innovative Android content transfer option.

iOS 26.4 Update Overview

The public release of iOS 26.4 is expected in late March, a timeframe consistent with previous iOS x.4 releases. The initial iOS 26.4 beta commenced on February 16, with Apple subsequently releasing developer beta 4 and a public beta.

Significant features identified in iOS 26.4 include:

  • Apple Music: Includes five new features, such as an AI Playlist Playground tool, a redesigned interface for albums and playlists, and concert information.
  • Apple Podcasts: Features an enhanced video experience.
  • CarPlay: Adds support for AI chatbot applications and video playback.
  • Health App: Integrates new Sleep and Vitals data.
  • Freeform: Incorporates Apple Creator Studio-exclusive features.
  • Reminders: Gains an 'Urgent' smart list.
  • Wallpaper Gallery: The gallery has received an update.
  • Stolen Device Detection: This critical security feature will be enabled by default.
  • Accessibility: The accessibility setting previously known as "Reduce Highlighting Effects" has been renamed to "Reduce Bright Effects," aiming to minimize highlighting and flashing.
  • New Emoji: New emoji characters include trombone, treasure chest, distorted face, hairy creature, fight cloud, orca, and landslide. The update also features new skin tone modifiers for people wrestling and dancers with bunny ears, alongside a gender-neutral option for the ballet dancer emoji.
  • New Device Support: iOS 26.4 and iPadOS 26.4 beta 4 are the first betas that can be installed on the new iPhone 17e and M4 iPad Air.

RCS Messaging Encryption

Apple conducted testing of end-to-end encrypted Rich Communication Services (RCS) messaging within early iOS 26.4 betas. However, this beta feature was subsequently removed from iOS 26.4 beta 4.

Apple has confirmed that end-to-end encryption for RCS will not be part of the iOS 26.4 update and is now planned for a future iOS release.

This feature is ultimately intended to provide iPhone-to-Android text message conversations with the same level of encryption currently available in iMessage communications.

Future Developments for Siri

iOS 26.4 is anticipated to be the first version to include an upgraded iteration of Siri. Apple and Google previously announced plans to integrate Gemini as the engine powering the improved Siri and Apple Intelligence.

Context of Previous Updates

These significant updates follow the official release of iOS 26.2 in December and iOS 26.2.1 in January. iOS 26.2 introduced new ways to modify Liquid Glass design elements and additional CarPlay customization options, while iOS 26.2.1 was released specifically for bug fixes.
