Cate Blanchett is confirmed to reprise her role as Viking warrior Valka in Universal Pictures' live-action How to Train Your Dragon 2.
Dean DeBlois, who co-created the screen franchise and directed the first live-action film, will return as writer, director, and executive producer for the sequel.
Universal's first live-action How to Train Your Dragon movie was released in June 2025 and grossed $636 million globally. The franchise is based on the book series by Cressida Cowell.
Blanchett will join a cast that includes Mason Thames, Nico Parker, Gerard Butler, Julian Dennison, Gabriel Howell, Bronwyn James, and Harry Trevaldwyn. Butler, who voiced Stoick the Vast in the animated films, is also reprising his role in the live-action iterations.
The sequel will adapt the events of the 2014 animated film, continuing the story of Hiccup, a Viking who integrates dragons into his village. Valka is portrayed as Hiccup's long-lost mother and the wife of Viking leader Stoick the Vast. Blanchett previously voiced Valka in the animated movies.
Marc Platt and Adam Siegel are producing the film via Marc Platt Productions. Universal Pictures has scheduled the release of How to Train Your Dragon 2 for June 11, 2027.
