Convicted Child Sex Offender Returns to Work at Petting Zoo Near Brisbane
Steven James Harvey, a convicted child sex offender, has been observed working again at City Chicks Farm and Cafe in Samford Valley, north-west of Brisbane. The venue is promoted as a family-friendly space for children.
Background
In 2017, Harvey was sentenced to eight years in jail for 15 sex offenses, including four against children and nine counts of rape. After his release, he began working at City Chicks.
In November, Nine News reported Harvey's presence at the establishment. Following this report, City Chicks owner Ingrid Dimock stated that Harvey had been removed from the premises and severed ties with the business.
Recent Developments
"A Current Affair" recently observed Harvey working in the cafe again. Harvey stated that police had been informed of his presence and had no issue with it. When questioned about working in an area frequented by children, Harvey referenced the number of registered sex offenders in Queensland, stating they "walk around the shops and everywhere else."
This is not the first instance where Harvey was found near children after his working with children permit was suspended. In 2016, he was seen operating a ride at a school while running a jumping castle business.
Public and Legal Concerns
Parents in the local area expressed concern regarding Harvey's return to the child-friendly cafe. Lawyer Andrew Carpenter commented on the situation, stating that if current legislation permits Harvey to work in such an environment, the laws should be revised.
Hearvey asserted his innocence regarding his past convictions, stating, "I'm not a sick individual, you are making stuff up." He also claimed the establishment was a "farm," not a "petting zoo."
Owner's Statement and Police Investigation
City Chicks owner Ingrid Dimock, who had been in a relationship with Harvey, communicated via text message that he had been cleared to return to work. She stated that he is contributing "legally in a strictly operational role behind the scenes, with no contact with children." However, Harvey was recorded interacting with a mother and child in the patting area during the recent observation.
Queensland Police confirmed they have "received additional information involving a man at Samford" and that this information is currently under investigation.
