Thousands of individuals have participated in demonstrations in Lisbon, Portugal's capital, to protest against proposed changes to labour laws.
The centre-right government has put forth measures that aim to alter employment regulations. These include provisions to simplify employee terminations, expand the practice of outsourcing work to external companies, and modify certain categories of compassionate leave, such as reducing bereavement leave in cases of miscarriage.
The government states that these measures are intended to enhance job flexibility and improve productivity within Portugal.
The General Confederation of Portuguese Workers (CGTP), the nation's largest trade union, characterized the proposed reforms as a substantial challenge to workers' interests. The union has announced a nationwide general strike scheduled for December 11.
