View source

Google has initiated the rollout of two Android beta updates: Android 16 QPR3 Beta 2.1 and Android 17 Beta 1, to Pixel devices. Android 16 QPR3 Beta 2.1 includes the January 2026 security patch, released approximately four weeks after its predecessor. Android 17 Beta 1 introduces new features focused on adaptive applications, performance enhancements, and improved media and camera functionalities, following a brief delay.

Android 16 QPR3 Beta 2.1 Update Details

Android 16 QPR3 Beta 2.1 has been released for Pixel devices, approximately four weeks after the Android 16 QPR3 Beta 2 update. Google's release notes for Beta 2.1 do not specify the fixes included in this particular patch.

The update incorporates the January 2026 security patch. Specific build numbers for this release are:

  • CP11.251209.009 for Pixel 6, 6 Pro, 6a, 7, and 7 Pro.
  • CP11.251209.009.A1 for all other supported devices.

The preceding update was identified as CP11.251209.007.A1.

Over-The-Air (OTA) updates for Beta 2.1 exhibit varying sizes, with a Pixel 9a update measured at 123 MB and a Pixel 10 update at 98.39 MB. OTA images are available for installation, though the Pixel 10 series is not included in the provision of these images.

Previous Android 16 QPR3 Beta 2 Improvements

The preceding Android 16 QPR3 Beta 2 update focused significantly on system stability, performance, and usability. Key issues addressed in that release included:

  • System Stability: Resolution of critical system crashes and device freezes.
  • Battery Management: Correction of issues related to devices ignoring charging limits and experiencing excessive overnight battery drain.
  • Connectivity: Improvements to Wi-Fi speeds and resolution of missed calls.
  • User Interface: Fixes for UI glitches in the notification shade and app drawer, alongside optimizations for unresponsive app drawer scrolling.
  • Android Auto: Correction of incorrect logging of extensive screen time.
  • Display: Resolution of graphical glitches, performance degradation in the notification shade, and screen flickering when waking from Always-On Display.
  • Audio: Improved audio routing logic to resolve delays in switching to speakerphone during calls.
  • App Compatibility: Fixes for startup crashes affecting certain applications, including Microsoft Intune apps.
  • Charging: Enhancements to the power management system to resolve inconsistent wireless charging and slow wired charging.
  • Foldable Devices: Addressing system crashes occurring when folding a device with an app open, through improved activity lifecycle management.

Android 17 Beta 1 Release

Android 17 Beta 1 has begun rolling out to Pixel devices, identified by build number CP21.260116.011, following a two-day delay. OTA images are available for this release.

This Beta release follows the introduction of the Android Canary channel in June, which replaced earlier Developer Previews. The Canary channel is designed to provide earlier access to features and APIs, improve stability through testing, and facilitate OTA updates and integration into continuous integration workflows.

Key Enhancements in Android 17 Beta 1

Android 17 Beta 1 introduces several significant enhancements across various aspects of the system:

  • Adaptive Applications: Applications are now enabled to utilize the full width of large screen devices without letterboxing. The developer opt-out previously available for applications targeting API level 37 has been removed, with games being an exception.
  • Performance: Improvements include reduced missed frames, lower garbage collection CPU costs, more aggressive optimizations, and decreased notification memory usage.
  • Media and Camera: Professional-grade tools are included to create seamless transitions between camera use cases and modes, intended to prevent visible glitches.
  • Audio: A new loudness management API has been implemented to provide a consistent listening experience across different applications and hardware.

Android 17 Development Timeline

Platform Stability for Android 17 is projected for March, with the final public release anticipated several months later in June. This 26Q2 release represents the major SDK release for the year, with subsequent minor SDK releases planned for 26Q3 (17 QPR1), 26Q4 (17 QPR2), and 27Q1 (17 QPR3).

Device Compatibility and Enrollment

Both Android 16 QPR3 Beta 2.1 and Android 17 Beta 1 are available for a wide range of Pixel devices, including:

  • Pixel 6, Pixel 6 Pro, Pixel 6a
  • Pixel 7, Pixel 7 Pro, Pixel 7a
  • Pixel Tablet, Pixel Fold
  • Pixel 8, Pixel 8 Pro, Pixel 8a
  • Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro XL, Pixel 9 Pro Fold, Pixel 9a
  • Pixel 10, Pixel 10 Pro, Pixel 10 Pro XL, Pixel 10 Pro Fold

The Android 17 Beta 1 system images are also compatible with the Android Emulator.

Users previously enrolled in the Android 16 QPR3 Beta program who have not opted out will automatically receive QPR3 Beta 2.1 and subsequent Beta updates within that branch. To receive Android 17 Beta 1, users can enroll in the Android Beta Program.

However, users currently enrolled in the Android 16 QPR3 Beta 2.1 program must exit that program before installing Android 17 Beta 1 to avoid a data wipe if they choose to return to a stable Android version.

The next opportunity to return to a stable version without a data wipe is projected for June.
