A Perth content creator, known online as Homeless Entertainment, has reported a significant decline in his income following TikTok's implementation of an under-16 age ban on December 10 of the previous year. The creator, Western, stated that his weekly earnings, which previously ranged from $100 to $400 through TikTok, have substantially decreased since the changes took effect.
Western experienced homelessness from the age of 13 until 17, finding purpose and a community online through social media. He credits social media with providing support during this period, enabling him to acquire a trailer, which currently serves as his residence.
Before the ban, Western's videos typically garnered between 100,000 and 800,000 views. Post-ban, video views have reportedly dropped to approximately 500, directly impacting his financial compensation. He indicated that 50 to 60 percent of his audience was under 16, with this demographic being a primary source of interaction on his livestreams, which generated the majority of his income.
Western's view on social media regulation is that measures should focus on the platforms themselves rather than restricting user access for younger individuals. He suggested that platforms should be directed to eliminate addictive features, improve content moderation, and prevent minors from encountering adult content. He also noted that social media served as a source of support groups during his youth when he experienced bullying.
Looking ahead, Western's aspirations include becoming a prominent content creator while maintaining a strong connection with his audience, aiming to be perceived as relatable.
