The Philippines is preparing for the arrival of Typhoon Fung-wong, locally known as Uwan, less than a week after Typhoon Kalmaegi resulted in significant fatalities and damage.
Typhoon Fung-wong Outlook
Typhoon Fung-wong is projected to intensify into a super typhoon, with sustained winds potentially reaching 185km/h (115mph), prior to making landfall on the island of Luzon. The earliest anticipated landfall is Sunday evening local time.
The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) has indicated that the storm will bring heavy rainfall and a risk of storm surges. Preparatory measures include the cancellation or online transfer of Monday classes by several schools and the cancellation of multiple local flights by Philippine Airlines.
Impact and Preparations
Fung-wong is expected to weaken rapidly after making landfall but is forecast to remain a typhoon as it traverses Luzon. Eastern areas of the Philippines have already begun experiencing heavy rains and winds as of Saturday evening local time.
Specific concerns are directed towards areas anticipated to receive a direct impact, including Catanduanes, an island situated off the coast of southern Luzon. Residents in low-lying and coastal regions have been advised to evacuate to higher ground. A civil defense spokesperson stated that evacuations should be completed by Sunday morning, ahead of heavy rain and strong winds.

The approaching Typhoon Fung-wong has necessitated the suspension of ongoing rescue operations related to Typhoon Kalmaegi, which was one of the strongest typhoons this year. Kalmaegi caused heavy rainfall, leading to mudslides and flash floods in residential areas.
The death toll from Typhoon Kalmaegi in the Philippines has reached 204, with over 100 individuals remaining unaccounted for. Additionally, five fatalities were reported in Vietnam, where the storm caused extensive damage including uprooted trees, roof detachment, and broken windows.
