The Division I Cabinet has approved modifications to transfer windows across multiple sports and has introduced new opportunities for women's sports. These changes were recommended by respective sport oversight committees.
Basketball
For both men's and women's basketball, the transfer window will now be open for 15 days, beginning the day after the respective NCAA championship game. This change is effective immediately.
In cases of a head coaching change, a separate 15-day window will open five days after a new head coach is hired or publicly announced. If a new head coach is not announced within 30 days of the previous coach's departure, and the 31st day falls after the championship game, a 15-day window will open. These additional coaching-change windows are available from the opening of the primary transfer window through January 2.
Midyear transfers in basketball are not eligible to compete at a second school if they enrolled at an NCAA school during the first academic term, irrespective of prior competition.
Men's Wrestling
For men's wrestling, the transfer window has been set to 30 days, starting annually on April 1. This replaces the previous 45-day window that opened after selections for the Division I Men's Wrestling Championships.
Men's Ice Hockey
Men's ice hockey will have a 15-day transfer window that begins on the Monday following the final of the Division I Men's Ice Hockey Championship.
Similar to basketball, a 15-day transfer period will open five days after a new head coach is announced following a coaching change. If a new head coach is not announced within 30 days of the previous coach's departure, and the 31st day is after the championship game, a 15-day window will open. These specific coaching-change windows are available from the opening of the ice hockey transfer window through January 2.
The Cabinet has directed the Women's Ice Hockey Committee to assess similar changes for Division I women's ice hockey student-athletes.
Track and Field
For men's and women's track and field, the transfer window that previously opened after the indoor track and field season has been removed. Student-athletes will continue to have a 30-day window that opens the day after selections for the Division I Men's and Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championships, in addition to windows occurring at the end of the fall academic term.
New Opportunities for Women's Sports
The Cabinet unanimously voted to establish National Collegiate Championships for acrobatics and tumbling, and for stunt. Final approval for these championships is contingent upon endorsement from Divisions II and III during their upcoming business sessions.
Additionally, women's flag football has been unanimously approved for inclusion in the Emerging Sports for Women program, effective immediately. Teams sponsoring the sport this spring will contribute towards the requirement of 40 schools sponsoring the sport and meeting minimum contest requirements for NCAA championship consideration.
