BMW M Charges Ahead: Neue Klasse and M3 EV Details Emerge

BMW M is poised to redefine high-performance driving with its first all-electric models, built on the innovative Neue Klasse platform. The M Neue Klasse model is currently undergoing final winter testing for an anticipated arrival in 2025, while an all-electric M3 model is projected for release in 2027. These pioneering vehicles will feature a quad-motor powertrain, advanced battery technology, and, notably for the M3, will include emulated engine sounds and gearshifts designed to enhance driver engagement.

Upcoming Models and Timeline

The M Neue Klasse, slated as the first all-electric BMW M model, is in its final phase of winter testing and is expected to arrive next year. Following this, a battery-electric M3 model is anticipated for release in 2027. BMW M previously offered a glimpse of the future with a Precision Driving Experience prototype for the M3 EV.

Core Powertrain and Battery Innovations

Both upcoming electric M models are set to utilize the BMW M eDrive system, featuring four electric motors from the BMW Gen 6 eDrive family.

The battery system for the M Neue Klasse will boast a 100kWh capacity with new cell chemistry optimized for performance.

It will also incorporate enhanced cooling and an 800-volt architecture designed for faster charging and energy recuperation. Crucially, the battery housing is integrated as a structural component, significantly contributing to chassis stiffness.

Advanced Vehicle Dynamics and Control

These vehicles will incorporate BMW M Dynamic Performance Control and xDrive all-wheel drive, featuring a decouplable front axle. The sophisticated quad-motor setup is engineered to allow for pure rear-wheel drive functionality, offering versatile driving experiences.

Technology and Sustainable Innovation

The M Neue Klasse will be at the forefront of technological integration, utilizing "Superbrains"—a collection of four high-performance computers responsible for controlling automated driving and infotainment functions. These systems are designed for faster updates and upgrades, ensuring the vehicles remain cutting-edge. Additionally, the vehicle will be the first BMW EV to employ natural fiber technology, serving a similar purpose to carbon fiber but with a lower CO2 production footprint.

Emulated Driver Feedback for the M3 EV

For the upcoming M3 EV, BMW M plans to integrate simulated engine sounds and emulated gearshifts. According to Frank van Meel, Global Head of BMW M, these features are intended to enhance emotional connection and provide acoustic feedback to drivers, rather than directly replicating a combustion vehicle.

The goal is to offer an engaging driving experience by connecting drivers with familiar high-performance inputs.

The new engine sound is indicated to adapt the basic sounds produced by the electric motor, distinctly differing from the inline-six or V8 engines found in previous M3 models. This innovative approach is similar to that utilized by Hyundai in its Ioniq 5 N model.

Executive Vision

Franciscus van Meel, BMW M Managing Director and Global Head, has articulated a clear vision for the brand's electric future. He stated that the next generation of models aims to establish a new benchmark in the high-performance vehicle segment. Van Meel added that the Neue Klasse technology is intended to elevate the BMW M driving experience, offering racetrack-ready dynamics for everyday use. He also specifically noted that the M3 EV will incorporate four independent electric motors, underscoring its advanced vehicle dynamics.

Van Meel expressed confidence in the current electric vehicle technology's ability to meet expectations for high-performance cars.

Dual-Path Future Strategy

Looking ahead, BMW M intends to maintain a dual-path strategy, continuing to develop both electric and combustion-powered vehicles, catering to a diverse range of driving enthusiasts.
