Paul Dano Responds to Quentin Tarantino's Criticism, Receives Widespread Industry Support

Actor Paul Dano has addressed comments made by filmmaker Quentin Tarantino regarding his performance in the 2007 film "There Will Be Blood." Dano expressed gratitude for the public and industry support he received following Tarantino's remarks, while numerous colleagues publicly defended his work.

Background of Tarantino's Criticism

In December, Quentin Tarantino discussed his list of favorite 21st-century films on Bret Easton Ellis's podcast. During the discussion, Tarantino placed Paul Thomas Anderson’s "There Will Be Blood" at No. 5, but indicated it would have ranked higher if not for Dano's involvement.

Tarantino characterized Dano's performance using terms such as "weak," "uninteresting," "weak sauce," and a "non-entity performance." One report also indicated Tarantino described Dano as the "weakest actor in SAG." Tarantino also extended criticism to actors Owen Wilson and Matthew Lillard.

Dano's Response

Paul Dano responded to the remarks ahead of a 20th-anniversary screening of "Little Miss Sunshine" at the Sundance Film Festival and in an interview with Variety. He expressed gratitude for the supportive responses from peers and social media users. Dano stated that the widespread support meant he did not have to comment earlier, noting:

"I was also incredibly grateful that the world spoke up for me so I didn't have to."

Industry Defense and Solidarity

Following Tarantino's comments, a number of Dano's colleagues publicly came to his defense:

  • Daniel Day-Lewis: A representative for Day-Lewis conveyed that the actor considered Dano "among the best and most talented actors of his generation."
  • Reese Witherspoon: Described Dano as an "incredibly gifted, versatile actor" and a "gentleman."
  • Matt Reeves: The director of "The Batman" called Dano an "incredible actor, and an incredible person."
  • Ben Stiller: Labeled Dano "fucking brilliant."
  • Alec Baldwin: Shared a video expressing his admiration for Dano.
  • George Clooney: During an awards ceremony, Clooney stated he would be "honoured" to collaborate with Dano, Owen Wilson, and Matthew Lillard, commenting on the prevalence of cruelty.
  • Toni Collette: Dano's co-star in "Little Miss Sunshine," reacted by stating, "Fuck that guy! He must’ve been high ... it was just confusing. Who does that?"
  • Jonathan Dayton: Co-director of "Little Miss Sunshine," described Tarantino's comments as an "embarrassment" and suggested Dano's performance might have made Tarantino uncomfortable due to its rawness.
  • Valerie Faris: Co-director of "Little Miss Sunshine," noted the immediate outpouring of support for Dano, highlighting his popularity and intelligence within the industry.

Matthew Lillard, also criticized by Tarantino, addressed the remarks, stating such comments "hurt your feelings" and "fucking suck," adding that they would not typically be directed at top-tier actors like Tom Cruise.
