The Victorian government has committed $50 million in support for farmers affected by fires across the state. This package includes contributions from both the federal and Victorian governments.
Funding Allocation
- $40 million will be provided as farm grants.
- $10 million will be made available through concessional loans.
Fire Impact
Fires have caused widespread damage and loss throughout the state.
- More than 1,000 farms have been identified as fire-affected.
- Livestock deaths are estimated to be in excess of 15,000.
- Hay deliveries are being made to surviving livestock.
Recovery Assistance
Farmers impacted by the fires can apply for new $75,000 grants, intended to assist with clean-up and recovery expenses. Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan noted the significant impact of the fires on prime agricultural land and the challenges primary producers face, such as livestock disposal. Concessional loans of up to $250,000 are also available for primary producers, which Ms. Allan stated are designed to offer longer-term support for damaged assets.
Industry Response
Victorian Farmers Federation president Brett Hosking described the damage and loss as extensive, projecting financial losses to be in the tens of millions of dollars.
