Thanasi Kokkinakis has withdrawn from his home tournament in Adelaide ahead of the Australian Open, citing an injury setback.
Kokkinakis received treatment during his 3-6, 6-3, 7-6(7/3) first-round victory over Sebastian Korda. Following the match, he indicated that he would have retired or not played if it were not his hometown event.
He stated that conversations were held with his team regarding the cost of playing, particularly after having surgery to allow for backing up matches throughout a tournament. This match marked Kokkinakis's first singles appearance on tour in 12 months.
Kokkinakis's withdrawal was confirmed shortly before his scheduled second-round match against Valentin Vacherot, who advanced to the quarterfinals via walkover. The injury was identified by Kokkinakis as being in his shoulder, distinct from the pectoral injury he underwent surgery for last year. He had considered stopping the match against Korda due to concerns about potential further damage.
