Multiple monkeys have been reported at large in St. Louis, Missouri, since Thursday. Animal control officials have stated the origin of the primates is unknown, and the ownership of exotic animals like primates is prohibited in St. Louis.

A primate expert from St. Louis Zoo identified the animals as vervet monkeys, which are small monkeys native to Africa with pale fur and black faces. While described as intelligent and social, the health department advises they can be unpredictable or aggressive under stress.

Initial reports suggested four monkeys, but officials confirmed more than one is at large. Sightings have primarily occurred in the O'Fallon Park neighborhood in the northern part of the city. Residents have been instructed to avoid approaching or attempting to capture the animals, instead reporting sightings to the health department.

Justen Hauser, the St. Louis health department's bureau chief of environmental health, stated that animal care and control officers are patrolling the area to locate the monkeys. Upon capture, the monkeys will be transported to a certified facility for exotic animals.
