Sykes made remarks regarding Gervais's absence, stating, "Ricky Gervais, I love you … for not being here." She continued, "I love you, Ricky, but if you win, and I get to accept the award on your behalf, you are going to thank God. And the trans community!"
Gervais has made comments online and in specials that have been described as transphobic. Sykes is a queer woman who has expressed support for the trans community.
Upon Gervais winning the award, Sykes announced, "He would like to thank God and the trans community." She then clarified that Gervais could not be there, and she was accepting the award on his behalf.
