D.C. Jury Acquits Man in Sandwich-Throwing Incident
A jury in Washington, D.C., rendered a not guilty verdict on Thursday for a man accused of assault. The charge stemmed from an incident where he threw a sandwich at a federal officer.
The jury concluded its deliberations after approximately seven hours.
Incident Details and Legal Proceedings
In August, the defendant, Sean Charles Dunn, reportedly directed verbal insults at federal officers, referring to them as "racists and fascists," before throwing a sandwich at one of the agents. Following the incident, Dunn was apprehended by police and subsequently terminated from his position at the Justice Department.
Initially, the U.S. Attorney's office in D.C. sought a felony assault charge. However, a grand jury did not indict him on the felony count, leading to the case being reclassified as a misdemeanor charge for assaulting a federal officer.
Defendant's Argument and Reaction
Dunn maintained that he was being targeted due to his criticisms of the Trump administration.
Following the verdict, Sean Charles Dunn stated outside the courthouse, "I'm relieved and I'm looking forward to moving on with my life."
