BBC Verify and BBC Persian are engaged in updating their map of protests in Iran.
Due to restrictions on reporting from within Iran, the BBC relies on analyzing hundreds of videos from both social media and direct submissions for verification.
A key part of this verification process is geo-location, which involves identifying the exact filming location of an event and collecting its latitude and longitude coordinates.
For mapping, video locations within the same town or city are grouped, yielding one set of coordinates per identified protest area. These points are then plotted on a map of Iran using the programming language R to visualize the spread of verified protests.
It is noted that some protests may not yet be mapped if verified video content is unavailable.
