A 25-year-old male driver died following a collision between a car and a truck on the Monaro Highway, south of Canberra, on Friday morning.
Emergency services responded to the incident near the intersection of the Monaro Highway and Royalla Drive around 11:30 AM. The driver of the car received treatment at the scene before being transported to a hospital in critical condition. He was pronounced deceased on Friday afternoon.
This incident marks the first road fatality for 2026 in the ACT.
The ACT Police's Major Collisions Team is conducting an investigation into the circumstances of the Monaro Highway collision. A report will be prepared for the coroner. Authorities are requesting that any individuals who witnessed the event and have not yet provided information contact Crime Stoppers.
Earlier the same day, approximately one hour prior, a separate multi-vehicle collision occurred on the Federal Highway at Bywong, resulting in the closure of all northbound lanes for several hours. This crash, located south of Lake George, led to two individuals being hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.
