The Lebanese army has announced it has established security control in the southern region of the country, an area historically influenced by the Iranian-backed movement Hezbollah. This development occurs amidst international pressure on Lebanon to disarm Hezbollah and concerns regarding a potential intensification of military operations by Israel against the group. The army's actions are part of a government-supported initiative following a ceasefire agreement in November 2024 that concluded a year-long conflict between Israel and Hezbollah.
Army Operations and Assessment
The Lebanese army had set a year-end deadline to clear non-state weapons from the area south of the Litani River, situated approximately 30 kilometers (20 miles) from the Israeli border. This constituted the initial phase of their security efforts.
The army stated that its objective in securing this area had been achieved "effectively and tangibly." However, it acknowledged that additional work is required to clear unexploded ordnance and tunnels from the region. Lebanese soldiers have, in recent months, dismantled infrastructure in areas previously controlled by Hezbollah in the south without encountering resistance from the group.

In response to the Lebanese army's announcement, the office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu issued a statement. It described the efforts toward disarming Hezbollah as "an encouraging beginning, but they are far from sufficient," citing "Hezbollah's continued attempts to rearm and reconstruct its terror infrastructure with Iranian support."
Officials from the United States and Israel have expressed concerns regarding the pace of the Lebanese army's actions. Israel has accused Hezbollah, which is designated a terrorist organization by countries including the US and the UK, of attempting to rebuild its military capabilities, particularly in the southern region. Israeli media recently reported that US President Donald Trump had approved an intensification of Israel's military campaign against Hezbollah, with Prime Minister Netanyahu reportedly having received authorization for such operations.
Hezbollah's Position
Hezbollah, which functions as both a militia and a political entity, has stated its compliance with the ceasefire agreement. The group affirmed the removal of its fighters from the southern areas, where various Palestinian factions, including Hamas, had also operated.
