Victoria Park Function Centre Closure Announced
On Thursday, Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner announced that the Victoria Park function centre is scheduled to close by June. This closure is to facilitate early construction works for the proposed Olympic Stadium.
Cr Schrinner indicated that a six-month notice period was provided for couples to adjust their wedding plans. He stated that the stadium's location at Victoria Park was publicly known since early last year, asserting that this provided advance awareness.
Impact on Planned Weddings
Jesse Cook, an individual with a wedding planned for September at Victoria Park, stated that the closure notification should have been issued earlier. He communicated that a six-month timeframe was insufficient for reorganizing a wedding, noting that his wedding planning commenced a year prior to the announcement. Mr. Cook characterized the mayor's comments as unreasonable and disrespectful. He further commented that the situation suggested inadequate communication and planning from the council and government.
Another individual, identified as Stacey, expressed disappointment regarding the cancellation of her June wedding plans at the venue. She noted the perceived difficulty in securing an alternative venue for the same date. Stacey also conveyed that her chosen wedding date held personal significance.
Council Response Regarding Re-bookings
Brisbane City Council was asked about potential financial compensation for wedding providers or the provision of alternative venues. A council spokesperson responded that individuals are responsible for re-booking council venues independently. The spokesperson mentioned the availability of other community venues across the suburbs for hire, subject to availability, and directed residents to the council website for venue information and booking requests.
The Queensland government plans to construct a new stadium at Victoria Park for the 2032 Olympics.
