Spring Break Traffic Danger Exceeds Holiday Risks, Study Finds

The Risk Window

A study published in Risk Analysis has identified late February to early April—the traditional spring break window—as the most dangerous travel period of the year for traffic fatalities and injuries. The risk during this timeframe significantly exceeds that of the Thanksgiving-to-New Year holiday season, as well as all other times of the year.

The Data

Researchers analyzed 12 years (2011–2022) of county-level crash data from the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. The study covered all 67 Florida counties, totaling over 42,000 observations.

For comparison, the Thanksgiving–New Year period showed a comparable rise in fatalities but no significant increase in overall non-fatal injuries.

Who Is Most Vulnerable?

Three groups face disproportionately higher risks during spring break, with fatal and non-fatal injury rates rising by 10–15%:

  • Young drivers (age 25 and under)
  • Out-of-state drivers (risk up to 37% higher)
  • Non-motorists (pedestrians and cyclists)

Beyond Drunk Driving

A surprising finding emerged regarding alcohol's role: Alcohol-related crashes did not spike significantly during spring break compared to other crash types.
