Respiratory illness activity, including influenza (flu) and Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV), is increasing in Washoe County. Health officials are recommending that residents implement precautionary measures to mitigate further spread.
The first flu-related death of the current season has been confirmed in a man over 65 years of age who had not received the flu vaccine for the current season.
Northern Nevada Public Health (NNPH) data indicates 79 flu-related hospitalizations occurred between December 21 and December 27. This brings the total number of flu-related hospitalizations for the season to 159. The dominant flu strain circulating in the community is identified as Type A (H3). Approximately 10% of outpatient visits in the region are currently attributed to flu-like illness.
RSV cases have also shown an increase, with 17 new cases reported last week, totaling 129 cases for the season. COVID-19 activity remains at lower levels, with three hospitalizations recorded last week. Health officials note that COVID-19 continues to circulate concurrently with other respiratory viruses.
NNPH is providing free flu and COVID-19 vaccinations to assist in controlling the spread of these illnesses. A clinic will be held on Wednesday, January 7, from 1:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. at 1001 E. 9th Street, Building B, in Reno.
- Flu Vaccinations: Available at no cost for individuals 6 months of age and older.
- COVID-19 Vaccinations: Available at no cost for individuals 12 years of age and older.
Appointments and insurance are not required for these services. A parent or legal guardian must accompany individuals under 18 years of age. Health officials state that vaccination is a primary method for reducing severe illness, hospitalizations, and fatalities during respiratory virus season.
