Wireless Power Consortium Advances 50W Wireless Charging at Xiaomi HQ

The Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) held an off-cycle meeting at Xiaomi's headquarters in Beijing, where it discussed 50W wireless charging speeds based on Qi and Qi2 technology. Xiaomi leads the development, using a "small inductance, low voltage, high power" solution.

Qi2 was introduced in 2023, with 25W charging arriving in 2025.

Adoption & Timeline

  • Limited Android uptake: Adoption of Qi2 with built-in magnets among Android brands has been limited.
  • Standard in progress: The 50W standard is not yet finalized but is described as "basically" complete, with updates potentially coming by 2028.
  • First mover expected: Xiaomi is expected to be first to implement the faster standard; Google Pixel and iPhone may follow as they have actively adopted Qi advancements.

Background

Most other Android brands have not adopted Qi2, despite widespread accessory support.
