Lancelin, a town 125 km north of Perth, is rallying to save its eroding main beach. Residents have launched a fundraising campaign to build a seawall after the shoreline retreated dramatically—now sitting just 7 meters from the Lancelin Sands Hotel, down from 15 meters in March 2025.
Over $40,000 has been raised in just four days from more than 100 donors, including a single anonymous contribution of $20,000. Locals estimate that $150,000 is needed to construct a 100-meter seawall to protect the pub, caravan park, and the fragile dune system.
Pub owner Glen Trebilcock expressed deep frustration with the lack of government action, though a WA government spokesperson noted that decisions on such structures are made after full technical assessment. The government has already provided $150,000 in emergency support in 2025 and continues assistance through the CoastWA program.
In a statement, the Shire of Gingin clarified that the proposed seawall would require approvals from multiple government authorities.
"We're watching our beach disappear," said Trebilcock. "It's heartbreaking."
