Leota, who turns 31 soon, is contracted to the Panthers until the end of 2027. Under standard NRL rules, players cannot officially be approached by other clubs until November 1. However, the Panthers agreed to an early release following a request from Leota's manager, Gavin Orr.
Orr stated the purpose is to assess Leota's market value. Reports indicate Leota currently earns approximately $750,000 per year. Leota has reportedly expressed a preference to remain with the Panthers for the remainder of his playing career.
Leota is among several Penrith players whose contracts expire after the 2025 season. These include Nathan Cleary, Isaah Yeo, Liam Martin, Brian To'o, Mitch Kenny, Isaiah Papali'i, Blaize Talagi, and Paul Alamoti. The club operates under the NRL's $12 million salary cap, which may increase due to a new broadcast rights deal, with projections of reaching $20 million by 2028.
