TPG Asia Co-Head Pleads Guilty After Crashing BMW into Five Vehicles in Sydney

Incident Overview

On June 1, Joel Thickins, the co-head of TPG Asia (a division of private equity firm TPG Capital), crashed his BMW into five vehicles in Queens Park, Sydney. The collision involved a Mazda and four parked cars.

Thickins pleaded guilty to negligent driving and refusing a breath test. According to court proceedings, he refused a roadside breath test at the scene and later refused a breath analysis at Paddington Police Station.

Based on his refusal to provide a sample, the judge assumed the incident involved high-range drink driving, which carries a maximum sentence of 18 months' imprisonment.

Legal Outcome

The judge described the incident as "an absolute shocker" and stated the defendant's behavior could not have been "much worse."

Thickins was:

  • Fined $880 for negligent driving
  • Fined $550 for refusing the breath test
  • Disqualified from driving for nine months

Statements from the Defendant

Thickins' barrister, Justin Wong, stated that his client "understands the seriousness of the matter" and is "ashamed and embarrassed." Wong noted that Thickins had no prior record and had completed the traffic offenders program.

In a statement, Thickins apologized to police, the court, and those affected by his actions:

"I accept full responsibility for the accident… this will never happen again."

He also stated he would cover all damage costs.

Company Response

TPG Capital issued a statement expressing disappointment regarding the incident. The firm noted it had conducted a third-party investigation that determined unrelated allegations against Thickins to be without merit.

Thickins has taken leave from the company.
