A collision involving multiple semi-trailers at a rest area on the Hume Highway near Goulburn, New South Wales, resulted in a large fire and the disappearance of one driver on 30 June 2026.
Incident Timeline
Emergency services were called to the Windmills Rest Area near Breadalbane, approximately 30-32 km south-west of Goulburn, shortly after 5 am. Police reported that two trucks collided while traveling northbound. The collision caused the vehicles to veer into additional semi-trailers parked at the rest stop.
Number of Vehicles and Casualties
Sources vary on the total number of vehicles involved. Police confirmed six trucks were involved in the incident, with one initially unaccounted-for driver later identified. Another report stated seven semi-trailers were involved.
Six male drivers were treated at the scene by paramedics for minor injuries. Two of these individuals were taken to a hospital for mandatory testing. One report stated three drivers were being treated for "serious injuries," while others described all injuries as minor. One driver remains unaccounted for. Four drivers escaped the initial collision.
Fire and Hazardous Materials
The collision triggered a fire that destroyed all involved trucks. The fire was fueled by several hazardous cargo items, including:
- Eight tonnes of butane cans (one truck)
- Resin (one truck)
- Memory foam (one truck)
- Alcohol (one truck)
The fire caused explosions. More than 30-40 firefighters responded, with Fire and Rescue NSW deploying seven fire trucks, including two HAZMAT appliances. Fire Rescue NSW Chief Superintendent Stephen Hirst stated that the smoke likely contains formaldehyde; he noted that limited exposure can cause burning sensations in the eyes, nose, throat, and lungs, and that prolonged exposure may be fatal. Firefighters used drones to monitor atmospheric chemicals.
Nearby homes were contacted and advised to close windows and doors due to the smoke.
Road Closures and Diversions
A 300-meter exclusion zone was established around the crash site. The Hume Highway was closed in both directions near Breadalbane, from Gunning to Cullerin Road/Manton to near Yarra. Southbound lanes reopened Tuesday afternoon; northbound lanes remained closed.
Motorists were advised to expect over an hour of extra travel time (one report specified 80 minutes) using a detour via the Federal and Barton Highways through Canberra. Operators of Class 1, 2, and 3 vehicles under a Notice were advised to use enforceable network maps; those under a Permit were instructed not to deviate from their approved route.

The cause of the collision is under investigation. Vehicle salvage and clean-up operations are ongoing.
