Key Findings
Rice University researchers published a study in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences Nexus proposing a new model of cochlear signal processing using graph signal processing (GSP).
The GSP method models the cochlea as a network of nodes and links, mimicking its natural spiral structure, unlike classical signal processing which uses a uniform grid. Testing showed the GSP model, called GSP Cochlea, performed better at detecting signals in noise than other models.
Analysis of hearing-loss data from over 200 patients indicated that worsening hearing loss was associated with a breakdown in network organization, not just reduced sensitivity to specific frequencies.
Implications
The findings suggest the cochlea structures sound information in a network-like fashion before sending it to the brain, and the GSP model may lead to personalized hearing aid and cochlear implant settings. The researchers plan to extend the approach to the auditory cortex.
