NASA Seeks Input on New Lunar Infrastructure Accelerator
Washington, D.C. — NASA has released a draft solicitation for the Lunar Enabling Infrastructure Accelerator (LEIA) , a program designed to foster the development of emerging capabilities critical for long-term human exploration of the Moon.
The initiative targets key technologies necessary for a sustained lunar presence. The draft solicitation specifically calls for proposals focusing on:
- Surface Power: Systems to generate and distribute reliable power on the lunar surface.
- In-Situ Resource Utilization (ISRU): Technologies to extract and process local materials, such as water ice and regolith, for life support, fuel, and construction.
- Advanced Manufacturing: Methods for fabricating tools, parts, and structures from lunar materials to reduce reliance on Earth-based supplies.
- Innovative Nanomaterials: Development of new materials with unique properties for enhanced performance in extreme lunar conditions.
U.S. organizations from industry, academia, and the non-profit sector are invited to review the draft document and provide feedback.
"This is a critical step in building the foundational infrastructure that will enable a permanent, sustainable human presence on the Moon," a NASA representative stated regarding the new solicitation.
The agency is seeking input to refine the program's scope and requirements before issuing a final solicitation. Interested parties are encouraged to review the draft and submit comments by the specified deadline.
