New Study Suggests Nasal Viruses Fuel Allergic Rhinitis, Antiviral Spray Shows Promise
A groundbreaking study reveals that common viruses living in the nose may be a hidden cause of allergic rhinitis, and that an inexpensive antiviral drug could offer lasting relief.

A new study published in Signal Transduction and Targeted Therapy has identified a surprising culprit in allergic rhinitis (AR): commensal viruses residing in the nasal cavity. The research suggests that these viruses, far from being harmless, actively contribute to the allergic inflammation that causes sneezing, congestion, and itching.
Key Evidence from the Lab
In mouse models, the study yielded compelling results:
- Intranasal ribavirin drops significantly reduced the abundance of nasal viruses.
- This treatment led to a marked decrease in eosinophil counts (a key marker of allergic inflammation).
- Levels of type I interferon and interleukins 4, 5, and 13—all key drivers of allergic responses—were lowered.
- AR symptoms were alleviated directly following treatment.
To confirm the causal role of viruses, researchers reintroduced nasal lavage fluid from untreated control mice. This procedure restored the allergic symptoms, strongly supporting the theory that the viruses were the underlying trigger.
Human Trial Shows Real-World Impact
The findings were then translated to human patients in a phase 2 randomized controlled trial (R-STAR).
- 42 patients with allergic rhinitis were enrolled.
- Participants received either ribavirin spray or a placebo for four weeks.
The results were significant:
- The ribavirin group showed improved total nasal symptom scores, rhinitis control assessment test scores, and visual analog scale scores.
- Cytokine levels (IL-4, 5, 13, 17A) and neutrophil extracellular trap activity were reduced.
- Remarkably, some patients experienced benefits that persisted at a one-year follow-up.
- No serious adverse events were reported.
