'Dangerous, Record-Setting' Heat Wave Engulfs Eastern Two-Thirds of U.S.
Over 102 million people are under extreme heat warnings as a heat dome traps dangerous temperatures and humidity across the Midwest, Ohio Valley, and East Coast.
The National Weather Service has warned of life-threatening conditions persisting through the July 4 holiday weekend, with heat index values expected to reach between 105°F and 115°F in multiple regions.
Scope and Timing
The heat wave is impacting a vast swath of the country, including Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Missouri, Iowa, Wisconsin, Michigan, Kentucky, Minnesota, Kansas, Tennessee, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, parts of southern New England, Washington, D.C., and the Baltimore area.

Meteorological Conditions
The heat wave is caused by a heat dome — a hot air mass that parks over a region and is trapped under a high-pressure lid. According to NWS forecaster Bryan Putnam, combining temperatures in the 90s to low 100s with humidity will push heat indices well into the 100s.
- Heat indices of 105–115°F are expected in parts of the Midwest and Mississippi Valley through Thursday, and in the Mid-Atlantic and Ohio in the following days.

Health Risks and Official Guidance
Several consecutive days of high temperatures with little relief at night can increase heat stress on the human body. Vulnerable populations include older people, those with respiratory problems, and pets. In Ohio, parts of North Carolina, and Washington, D.C., extreme temperatures and humidity are especially threatening for people with respiratory issues and the elderly.
- Richard Allan, a climate scientist at the University of Reading, stated that high humidity makes it more difficult for the body to cool off through sweating.
- New York City Health Commissioner Alister Martin said heat strokes are "fast, deadly, and almost always preventable," and advised using air conditioning, hydrating, and checking on neighbors.
- The Missouri State Emergency Management Agency advised limiting prolonged outdoor exposure and taking immediate action if someone shows signs of heat-related illness.

At least 13,000 Americans have died from heat since 2018, according to the CDC. Extreme heat is considered the deadliest weather-related hazard in the U.S.
Response Measures
Cooling centers have been opened in affected communities. In Chicago, centers have been activated at community service centers, senior centers, libraries, city colleges, and police districts. Chicago Public Schools announced all summer programming will be held indoors Monday through Wednesday.
The heat wave has also led to cancellations of summer camps and outdoor activities in the Midwest.

- Ashley Ward, director of the Heat Policy Innovation Hub at Duke University's Nicholas Institute, stated: "The baseline is warmer. So, when a heat dome or a high-pressure system sets up, it's now starting from a hotter floor. And that makes the extreme heat more likely."
- El Niño, declared earlier this month, is also expected to contribute to higher temperatures across the northern U.S. and parts of Canada.
