China's Tianwen-2: A Dual-Mission to an Asteroid and a Comet

China's first asteroid sample-return mission, Tianwen-2, launched on May 28, 2025, is on a swift trajectory to rendezvous with the near-Earth asteroid 469219 Kamoʻoalewa in early July 2025.

The Target: A Possible Fragment of the Moon
Discovered in 2016, Kamoʻoalewa measures between 40 and 100 meters across. It is classified as a quasi-satellite of Earth, meaning it orbits the Sun while remaining in a stable, co-orbital dance with our planet. Its scientific importance is heightened by its reflectance spectrum, which closely resembles lunar rocks—strongly suggesting it may be a fragment of the Moon ejected by a past impact event.

Mission Objectives & Timeline
The Tianwen-2 spacecraft will execute a complex, multi-phase operation:

  • Remote Sensing: Conduct extensive observations and mapping of the asteroid's surface.
  • Sample Collection: Using touch-and-go maneuvers and an anchoring drill system, it aims to collect 20 to 100 grams of surface material.
  • Earth Return: A sample capsule is planned for landing on Earth in November 2027.

A Journey Beyond: The Comet Encounter
After delivering its sample, the mission will not end. Tianwen-2 will utilize an Earth gravity assist to redirect its course toward the main-belt comet 311P/PanSTARRS, with an expected arrival around 2035. This will mark China's first in-situ exploration of a comet.

Context and Significance
This mission is a significant milestone in China's expanding deep-space exploration program, demonstrating advanced capabilities in autonomous navigation, sampling, and multi-target trajectory design. It is the country's first endeavor to return material from an asteroid.
