Clarke Steps Down as Scotland Manager After World Cup Exit
Steve Clarke has resigned as head coach of the Scotland national football team, following the team's elimination from the World Cup at the group stage. The Scottish FA announced his departure on Saturday, after Croatia's win over Ghana confirmed Scotland could not advance as one of the best third-placed teams.

Players were informed on Saturday, with Clarke and the squad still in Charlotte. The resignation comes just one month after Clarke had signed a new four-year contract.
Tournament Performance
Scotland's World Cup campaign began with promise but ended in disappointment:
- Opening win: Scotland defeated Haiti 1-0 in their opening Group C match in Boston
- They then lost 1-0 to Morocco in Boston
- Followed by a 3-0 defeat to Brazil in Miami
- Finished third in Group C with three points and a goal difference of -3
- Their only chance to advance was as one of the eight best third-placed teams; that hope ended on Saturday, three days after the Brazil defeat

Clarke reflected on his tenure with a focus on his players:
"The most emotional part of this goodbye is for my players, without whom we wouldn't have had any of the memories that we've accumulated from 2019 until now. They deserve all the praise and adulation that they receive and it was truly an honour to be called their gaffer. Thanks for having me and good luck to my successor."
A Seven-Year Legacy
Clarke became Scotland head coach seven years ago. Under his leadership, Scotland qualified for two European Championships and this World Cup, ending a 24-year absence from major tournaments (their last World Cup appearance was in 1998).
However, Scotland won only one match across the three tournaments — the victory against Haiti.
Scottish FA chief executive Ian Maxwell acknowledged the mixed results while praising the overall progress:
"While we are all disappointed to have exited the World Cup at the group stage, we must not lose sight of the undeniable progress made during Steve's seven years in charge. From starting as a pot four team in 2019 to topping our World Cup qualifying group, he has more than delivered on the remit to take Scotland back to a major tournament."
