Gaming Hardware Sales in Flux: PlayStation & Xbox Slump, Switch 2 Surges

"Despite a 58% year-over-year drop for PlayStation and the worst May ever for Xbox, total gaming hardware sales rose—driven entirely by the Nintendo Switch 2."

PlayStation & Xbox Struggle in May 2026
In May 2026, Sony's PlayStation sales plummeted 58% year-over-year, marking the worst May performance for the brand since 2000. Microsoft's Xbox sales also hit a historic low, recording their worst May ever.

Nintendo Switch 2 Defies the Trend
Despite these declines, overall gaming hardware sales increased thanks to the launch of the Nintendo Switch 2. The console became the second-best-selling system behind the PlayStation 5. It sold 5.9 million units in the past 12 months, making it the second-fastest-selling hardware product in history, trailing only the Game Boy Advance (6.5 million units).

Industry Context: Price Hikes & New Hardware on the Horizon
Both Sony and Microsoft have increased console prices and are preparing next-generation hardware—the PlayStation 6 and Project Helix (Xbox). These moves come as both companies seek to reverse declining sales. In a significant shift, Xbox announced it will end production of the Series X console.

Game Sales & Industry Revenue

  • 007: First Light was the best-selling game in May 2026 and the fourth-highest seller of the year.
  • Forza Horizon 6, released in April, remained a top seller.
  • LEGO Batman also performed well.

Total industry sales reached $4.2 billion in May 2026, a 3% increase from May 2025.
