Dr. Anthony Halog, a researcher at the University of Queensland, stated that oil shocks take time to emerge through supply chains. He noted that the depth of fossil fuel dependence is in materials, used in an estimated 70,000 everyday products.

Examples of oil-derived components in everyday products include:

  • Plastics and synthetic rubber in vehicles
  • Polyester in clothing
  • Nitrogen fertiliser for natural fibres
  • Benzene-derived paracetamol in medicines

Australia's Particular Vulnerability

Dr. Halog noted that Australia is particularly exposed due to its reliance on imported refined fuels and chemical feedstocks. Professor Mehdi Seyedmahmoudian of Swinburne University suggested reducing dependency on oil in energy production as an immediate to medium-term measure.

Alternatives on the Horizon

The article outlines several potential replacements for petroleum:

  • Recycled materials
  • Green hydrogen
  • Biomass — Professor Wilson noted that biomass from waste sources, such as agricultural waste, can be used without compromising food production
  • Carbon dioxide capture — though conversion remains energy-intensive

Professor Wilson remarked that the renewable chemicals industry has about 20 years of development, compared to over a century for petrochemicals.

The Challenge of Transition

Professor Seyedmahmoudian stated that a transition away from petrochemicals requires a similar scale of change as the energy sector, but lacks sufficient social pressure and government policy.
