Coloring Outside the Lines: An Exhibition Where the Artwork Changes Daily
A new exhibition in Ballarat, Victoria, is turning the traditional gallery experience on its head. Memento Mori: Unleashed features images from Xander Savage's coloring book, but with a twist: visitors are encouraged to pick up a marker and color them in.
The exhibition is held at TBH Studio, an art collective space co-founded by Toni Louise, Brittany Wallmeyer, and Holly Would. Louise said the interactive aspect of the exhibition was a key reason for hosting it.
“We wanted to create a space where people feel invited to participate, not just observe.”
The layout is designed for accessibility. Savage's coloring book pages are pinned directly to the wall, and a case of 262 markers is available for visitors to use. Some pages are placed lower to accommodate children and wheelchair users.
The exhibition has been open for several weeks, and Savage noted that it has been fascinating to watch the artwork evolve over time. Each visitor adds their own mark, transforming the pieces into a collaborative, ever-changing canvas.
