Mets Part Ways with Manager Carlos Mendoza; Andy Green Appointed Interim
The New York Mets have dismissed manager Carlos Mendoza, effective June 20, 2025, and named Andy Green as interim manager for the remainder of the season. The organization plans to conduct a full search for a permanent manager during the upcoming offseason.
Background of the Change
Carlos Mendoza, 46, was in his third season as the team’s manager, having been hired before the 2024 campaign. In his first season, the Mets posted an 89-73 record and advanced to the National League Championship Series. However, the team missed the playoffs in 2025 after a second-half decline.
Multiple key players—including Francisco Lindor, Juan Soto, and Clay Holmes—have sustained injuries this season. As of June 20, the team’s record stood at 34-47, placing them last in the National League East, 15 games behind the division-leading Atlanta Braves and 9.5 games out of a Wild Card spot. The Mets had lost six consecutive games and were a season-worst 14 games under .500.
"Change is necessary to move forward."
— David Stearns, president of baseball operations
Statements from Team Officials and Players
David Stearns, president of baseball operations, said the decision was made because the team has "fallen short." He added, "Mendy’s included, we haven’t been able to get this going this year. And I take responsibility for that." Stearns noted that a new voice may help the team, though just seven weeks prior, he had stated the team did not view the situation as a managerial problem.
Owner Steve Cohen said, "This season has been a disappointment and our fans deserve better than what we’ve delivered."
Shortstop Francisco Lindor offered a candid assessment: "At the end of the day, this is not on him. It’s more on us, the players, that we didn’t perform to our capabilities."
Appointment of Interim Manager Andy Green
Andy Green, 48, was appointed interim manager for the remainder of the season. He previously served as the team's senior vice president of baseball development and will return to that role after the season.
Green managed the San Diego Padres from 2016 to 2019, compiling a 274-366 record before being fired with a week left in the 2019 season. He later served as bench coach for the Chicago Cubs and interviewed for managerial roles, including the Mets position that went to Mendoza in 2024.
The Mets lost their first game under Green, 2-1 to the Philadelphia Phillies, extending their losing streak to seven games.
Future Managerial Search
The team plans to conduct a full search for a permanent manager during the 2025-2026 offseason.
Albert Pujols, a future Hall of Fame player, stated in an MLB Network appearance that he "would love to get the opportunity" to manage the Mets. Pujols has managed in the Dominican Winter League and will lead the Dominican Republic in the 2026 World Baseball Classic. He has no Major League Baseball managerial experience.
