Focus Features to Release New 'Sense and Sensibility' Adaptation on October 16

Focus Features has released the first trailer for its new adaptation of Jane Austen's Sense and Sensibility.

Daisy Edgar-Jones stars as Elinor Dashwood, one of three sisters forced to leave their family estate with their widowed mother and move to a cottage, where they experience love and heartbreak.

A Faithful Take on a Classic

Director Georgia Oakley's adaptation appears to be a faithful take on Austen's debut novel, based on the teaser. The cast also includes:

  • Esmé Creed-Miles as Marianne Dashwood
  • Caitríona Balfe as Mrs. Dashwood
  • Frank Dillane as John Willoughby
  • Herbert Nordrum as Colonel Brandon
  • Bodhi Rae Breathnach as Margaret Dashwood
  • George MacKay as Edward Ferrars
  • Fiona Shaw as Mrs. Jennings

Awards Pedigree and Production Credentials

Oakley's debut feature Blue Jean earned nominations for a BAFTA Film Award and a British Independent Film Award.

Sense and Sensibility is produced by Working Title Films, known for rom-coms such as Love Actually and Bridget Jones’ Diary, and previous Austen adaptations including 2005's Pride & Prejudice and 2020's Emma.

A Rich History of Adaptations

Previous screen adaptations of Sense and Sensibility include a 1995 Oscar-winning version directed by Ang Lee, starring Emma Thompson and Kate Winslet, with Thompson winning an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay.

Release Date

Focus Features will release Sense and Sensibility in the U.S. on October 16.
