Shiite Muslims Observe Ashoura Amid Regional Turmoil
Millions of Shiite Muslims across the Middle East and Asia gathered on Thursday, June 25, 2026, to mark Ashoura, the solemn 10th day of Muharram, commemorating the martyrdom of Imam Hussein at the Battle of Karbala in 680 A.D.
The observance unfolded against a backdrop of ongoing regional conflicts in Iran and Lebanon, and followed the killing of Iran’s former supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
Observances by Location
Iraq (Karbala)
Security was tightened at the shrine of Imam Hussein, where large crowds gathered for the central commemoration. A visitor from Iran, Redha Nouri, noted the size of the gathering and the availability of services.
Iran (Tehran)
Mourners dressed in black filled streets and mosques. Shops were closed; processions marched, and volunteers distributed tea and dates. President Masoud Pezeshkian attended a ceremony at the shrine of Imam Ruhollah Khomeini. On the eve of Ashoura (Tasu’a), mourners remembered Abbas ibn Ali, Imam Hussein’s half-brother, who was killed while attempting to bring water to the camp.
Lebanon (Tyre & Beirut)
Families of individuals killed while affiliated with Hezbollah or serving as paramedics attended sermons. Portraits of Iranian Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei and Hezbollah Secretary-General Naim Kassem were displayed. Many attendees visited the grave of former Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah, who was killed in an Israeli strike in September 2024.
Pakistan
Authorities deployed thousands of police and paramilitary personnel in response to intelligence reports of potential militant attacks on Shiite Muslims. Mobile phone service in some areas was scheduled for temporary suspension.
Background and Regional Context
Ashoura commemorates Imam Hussein’s refusal to pledge allegiance to the Umayyad caliphate, resulting in his death along with 72 of his family members and companions. The event is cited as a factor deepening the historical Sunni-Shiite schism.
The 2026 observance is the first since the killing of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, which reports indicate occurred on February 28 during an airstrike attributed to Israel. The war in Lebanon began with Hezbollah firing rockets into northern Israel. Israel subsequently conducted aerial bombardment and a ground invasion. Reports state over one million Lebanese were displaced.
On the eve of Ashoura, Quds Force commander Gen. Esmail Ghaani was reported to have warned Israel to withdraw from Lebanon or face defeat. Earlier in the week, the U.S. and Iran launched talks aimed at finalizing a ceasefire agreement.
Future Events
The funeral procession for Ayatollah Ali Khamenei is scheduled to occur shortly after Ashoura.
