Intel has announced plans to expand its presence in the gaming hardware sector, specifically targeting portable gaming devices. This initiative was detailed by Daniel Rogers, Intel vice president and general manager of PC products, at CES on Monday.
New Platform Details
The forthcoming platform will integrate both hardware and software components. It is based on the company's Intel Core Series 3 processors, codenamed Panther Lake, which were initially announced last year and are currently being implemented across various PC models.
A key feature of this future platform is a dedicated chip designed for handheld gaming devices, information corroborated by IGN and TechCrunch. These Panther Lake chips represent Intel's first products built using its 18A manufacturing process, with production having commenced in 2025.
Market Context and Competition
Intel has a longstanding history in the gaming industry, having developed chips for gaming PCs since the 1990s. The company further entered the gaming graphics market in 2022 with the introduction of its Intel Arc GPUs.
The handheld gaming market is presently largely controlled by AMD. AMD also made announcements at CES, including a new processor for gaming PCs, the AMD Ryzen 7 9850X3D, alongside new ray tracing and graphics technologies for gaming.
Intel stated that additional information regarding its new offerings for handheld gaming devices will be released later this year.
